We covered DNS lookup earlier in the book. DNS lookup will take a domain name and look up its mapped IP. This process occurs each time the IP is not present, and it increases latency due to this check. Most Apache distributions have this turned off by default, but if not, it can have a significant detrimental effect. To turn off this feature, we need to make a change to the configuration file s HostnameLookup key. The directive might already be set to Off, but if it s not, change it to Off and restart the server.

The assignment operator = also returns a result, in this case the value assigned to the left-hand side. There is a veritable cornucopia of object-oriented development modules available for Perl, all of which aim to automate much of the process of creating new object classes. Most of them are in the Class:: namespace, and many of them are dedicated to implementing different kinds of object semantics. Two useful third-party modules available from CPAN are Class::MethodMaker, which can automatically generate object properties and methods, and Class::Multimethods, which gives Perl the ability to select methods from multiple parent classes based on the type and number of arguments passed (a feature present in several other object-oriented languages but absent from Perl). Class::Contract allows for object classes to be designed and implemented according to the contract of their defined interface. If none of these suffice, there are nearly 200 others of varying ability and maturity available for consideration. Aside from CPAN, Perl comes with two basic object class construction mechanisms that can simplify the development of object classes. First, there are the base and fields pragmatic modules, which allow us to create objects based on pseudohashes or restricted hashes (depending on how new our Perl is). Various extension modules are available on CPAN that build on these two modules to provide more advanced object semantics. Second, the Class::Struct module provides a simple way to create objects with attributes of predeclared data types scalar, array, hash, etc. and autogenerates appropriate accessors and mutators for them.

In order to use Ant to create a new Model-Glue application directory, first create an Eclipse project for the modelglueapplicationtemplate directory, and then open modelglueapplicationtemplate/build.xml. You need to change two Ant properties (configuration parameters): On line 21, the newApplicationName property defines the name of the new application.
