External programs are ironically easier to use as filters than from CGI scripts because they don t need to return a Content-type header as CGI scripts do. As a result, any program that accepts the data to process on standard input and sends it to standard output can be set up as a filter. This gives you a quick-and-dirty way to provide content encodings, language translations, and character set transformations. I say dirty because, like a CGI script, the filter executes each time a request is passed to it, which is much less efficient than an internal filter. These filter definitions encode their input; they don t care what the media type is because the encoding is independent of the original document. Consequently, you don t set an input media type or an output media type. The media type of the file will therefore be preserved across the operation of the filter. You can also have a filter operate on any media type but set the output type to override it.
