Point Lights Point lights are rather common in a 3D scene. They have the characteristic of radiating light in all directions from a single point in space (different apparent sizes of the light can be simulated in the material definition for an object, as you will learn in the next chapter). Point lights are rather useful for simulating the light radiating from, say, a lighting fixture such as a wall sconce or table lamp, as well as any moving object that needs to radiate light on its surroundings in the scene. Spot Lights Spot lights are similar to point lights, with the additional characteristic of direction. A spot light also has a cone effect; you can specify an additional falloff rate as a function of the angle of deviation from the light s inner cone to its outer cone, as shown in Figure 5-9.
